My name is Hunter Nichols, and I am so excited to serve as the new assistant principal for Gwin Elementary! The faculty and staff have been so welcoming, and I look forward to serving alongside this devoted team!
I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share a little about my educational career and work experience that has led me to this position. In 2013, I began my educational career as a child consumer specialist through the Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center. I worked with children with emotional and behavioral issues resulting from many life challenges. While pursuing my bachelor's degree, I began subbing for Jasper City Schools while continuing my work with the mental health center. In 2017, I graduated with a double major in early childhood and elementary education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After I graduated, I accepted a position as a kindergarten and first-grade Title 1 reading interventionist at T.R. Simmons Elementary. Since then, I have taught third grade at Memorial Park Elementary for the past five years. Being inside the classroom setting has been a rewarding experience for me. It's incredible to see the growth and development of students over the course of a school year. Within my classroom, I always strive to create a positive and engaging learning environment with high expectations where every student feels valued and supported. Although I loved my time inside the classroom setting, my ultimate goal was to be in a position to lead other educators. In 2022, I received my master's degree from the University of West Alabama in educational leadership. I recently moved to the Birmingham area, and this past February, I was able to marry my high school sweetheart, Ashleigh. We have a Goldendoodle named Teddy, who is seven years old. I enjoy running, traveling, and spending time with friends and family!
I always look forward to a new school year to have the opportunity to meet new students and family members! I am thrilled about this opportunity to work at Gwin and look forward to meeting many of you soon!
